10 Myths of Yoga Teacher Training

By MetroPowerYoga | In Blog | on November 10, 2017

There are SO many misconceptions surrounding Yoga Teacher Training. Let me set the record straight with this list debunking the myths:

  1. It’s only good for people who are SUPER flexible
    1. We do yoga to GET more flexible! In fact, the best teachers are those who can relate to not being flexible and can empathize with new and stiffer students. You probably DO want to have a consistent practice before embarking on this however!
  2. It’s just for 20-something women
    1. Anyone and everyone should consider this training. Not only does it teach you about yoga, meditation and yoga philosophy, you’ll get in deeper touch with yourself and form stronger relationships with others.
  3. You have to be a vegan, vegetarian
    1. Not at all! and you don’t have to give up your coffee and wine. Of course we notice how our bodies perform after “hard living” but no one will judge your choices.
  4. Don’t even think about it unless you want to teach yoga
    1. Teacher training is more like LEADER training. Learning how to LIVE yoga is what you’ll gain from the process.
  5. It’s just about learning poses and doing a bunch of Yoga asana (poses)
    1. Well yes, but it’s so much more! You’ll get a LOT more clear on your thinking and self-talk. You’ll do a LOT of inquiry. Expect to grow!
  6. It’s easy
    1. Growth is never easy. You’ll laugh and you can expect to cry. It’s neither physically nor emotionally easy. Expect a challenge of the most rewarding kinds.
  7. It’s expensive
    1. Most teacher trainings cost LESS than the price of one yoga class per hour. In the scheme of education and credit hours, it is FAR less expensive than college courses. Think of it an an investment in your FUTURE SELF.
  8. You have to meditate daily for at least 30 minutes
    1. While meditation is a part of the training, there are no requirement nor expectations surrounding this.
  9. You will have the same outlook on life after you’re certified
    1. You will change. You will see things differently.
  10. You have to always be upbeat and positive AND have it ALL figured out
    1. The chief reason to do teacher training is to come to recognize that you don’t have it all figured out and that you Do NOT have to! We all have our moods, crises and up’s and downs. What the gift of yoga provides is a mechanism for DEALING with these cycles.
